I have a GUI again, and I feel a bit dumb for having filed the bug. Turns out an install with a fresh daily alternate iso fixed the issue. Next time I’ll wait to see if a fresh install fixes if I’m running the development branch.
My GUI-less weekend was fun.
I learned some valuable lessons:
- I can be productive without a GUI. Required tools: gnu screen, mutt, irssi, bitlbee, w3m, cplay, etc.
- Google reader doesn’t work with w3m. This is a good thing.
- Facebook doesn’t work with w3m (or any other text-based browser, for that matter). Again, this is a good thing.
- RT and mediawiki are somewhat usable with w3m. This is important for me, as we use both internally.
- I really love Firefox. As much as I rag on it sometimes, it was painful to be without it. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. Seriously: I love you Firefox.
- There’s nothing like breaking things to teach you new tricks. I think this is a lesson I’ll have to keep re-learning, as I’m not a huge risk-taker by default.
- Here’s the kicker. It involves setting aside ego completely: as soon as you’re sure you’ve found a bug, stop yourself. Ask what it would take to confirm it. Do as much as possible before filing. I should have known better here. Apologies to all the people who got about ten emails because of the bug I filed.
