Vista DVD player crashes, VLC to the rescue

Last night was a COSI meeting. We had free pizza and showed the movie Revolution OS. Bear with me; I promise it gets funny. We had the meeting in a room equipped with a computer and ceiling-mounted projector. This is a classroom in Manning Hall used for Information and Library Science classes. The classroom and SILS lab PCs were all recently switched to Windows Vista. The computer in this particular classroom was an Alienware (!?!) PC. When we arrived, we stuck the DVD of Revolution OS in the DVD drive and Vista automatically fired up DVD player software…. which crashed hard. I’ll see if I can get a screenshot at some point. If I’d been thinking I would’ve grabbed one already.

So what’d we do? We downloaded VLC and played the DVD using that, of course! Open Source Software to the rescue. :)
