I went down to the grind to grab some food, but decided it was too gorgeous out to eat at my desk, so I wandered over to the tables in front of the Union. I sat down at a table next to a… pair? couple? …who were having a philosophical discussion that wandered around from Plato to Rousseau to Douglas Adams (thematically–they weren’t citing page numbers or anything), the whole while seeming to be hovering around the question of how Jesus… fits. More or less.
I realized that I was incredibly excited that other students were talking about things weightier than TV, basketball, etc, and they apparently weren’t doing it in the context of talking about a class they had.
I interjected when they both stumbled trying to remember how the Question to the Ultimate Answer fit in, explaining that earth was in fact a computer. After a bit more conversation, it became clear that Jesse was writing a paper for a religion class, so there was in fact a connection to school, but the fact that they talked at such length about various religion and philosophy topics was still gratifying. Jesse asked me how I identified myself in terms of religious views. I took too long explaining about my parents, the problem of identifying the Historical Jesus, and the various denominations my parents and I have been associated with. We then introduced ourselves, but didn’t exchange any contact info. Maybe I’ll run into them again. It would be nice to get into more discussion. ![]()
