On Friday our Fearless Leader (Paul Jones) was telling us about a meeting he had pushed back until Tuesday (not Monday since it was a holiday: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day). “People are more important than computers,” said Paul. “Dr. King said that.”
“Said what now?” I cut in. I’m not the best with dates, but I know MLK was killed before Unix was born, so in my book “computers” weren’t around back then. I was curious as to what exactly Dr. King could have meant if he had indeed said such a thing.
“Yeah. I’m sure he said that,” continued Paul. “Or something like it. I’ve got a sign here somewhere. Lemme find it.”
I went to run an errand. When I came back, there was a cardstock sign on my desk:
It wasn’t just a sign. For me it’s a Sign that I’m in the right place. I felt really lucky to have the chance to come work with ibiblio. This is why.
For those of you who can’t read the sign because it’s in a .png, across the top is “CLOSED” in very large letters. Just below that it reads “for Martin Luther King, Jr’s Birthday.” Below that and to the right is Dr. King, waving. To the left is a quote: “When machines & computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered.” At the bottom it lists his birth and death dates: “January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968.”
